ReplyDeleteIt will be good if people first acquire knowledge on issues and then make comments. What happened in OU on Feb 14th, 2010 was a violation of fundamental rights and thats accepted by the Govt themself. They have released Rs 7.94 Lakhs as compensation to media persons who got injured and whose vehicles got damaged. Read this GO,

Then coming to the incidents of the day in OU, Many of the celebrated activists who were part of the all party meet yesterday who condemned the attack on JP were also part of a fact finding committee on OU and their report unequivocally condemned the highhanded behavior of the police that day and in detail listed down what all atrocities police committed that day.
What is expected of JP(LSP) is a statement to that effect.
Dont be blinded for your worship for one man. The physical attack on JP is condemnable and should be condemned. That does mean you people blindly follow and lose capacities to question wrong decisions by the party. This very "ONE MAN WORSHIP" that LSP uses as a weapon against other parties can now be seen in LSP as well. It is no different.
There are a lot of questionable decisions by the party. Sample this,

I agree with you, Rakesh garu. The non-statement on the OU incident was a mistake. My own opinion is that JP let his love for law and order cloud his judgement. At that point, the emotions attached to the issue should have been rightfully ceded to. He made a mistake and is paying for it. however, in my opinion, attributing it to an alliance with Andhra capitalists is stretching the imagination, far enough to ignore the substantial indicators to the contrary.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the point I was making above to Meenakshi garu is that JP's mistakes have to be tallied against what he does right. Especially, a separate Telangana is not the last word on anything. Our love for Telangana should not make us blind to everything else.
I agree with you again on the fixation of Lok Satta supporters with JP. It is especially vexing because there IS much more to LSP than JP. If the supporters themselves don't care, why blame doubters/opponents? Here is an attempt to highlight the grassroots leaders in the party, some really committed public servants: http://lspleaders.wordpress.com.
Lok Satta has a long way to go. Either it will learn from the mistakes or perish. Best for supporters and opponents alike to have a sense of balance; avoid the blind worship or the one eyed hatred.
Dear Sundeep,
ReplyDeleteLove for law and order? If there are police excesses, that is not law and order. Anyways, you accept its a mistake.
Separate Telangana is definitely not the last word. There are efforts to tell people what after separate telangana.
I dont agree with you on tallying ones mistakes with their good. If we get into the business of condoning ones mistakes just because he/she has done something right, then we are accepting mediocrity and falling into the same old trap of regular politics. The way is to appreciate good, but not think twice in raising questions and criticizing if you find something wrong. I can safely say majority loksatta volunteers dont have capacities to question those mistakes because JP is a GODto them. Whatever he says is gospel. How ironic is it that a party which says it is for true democracy has a long list of volunteers who only submit themselves to a monarchy like system. How can it even change the country?
I dont have any one eyed hatred. Where there is due, JP gets his credit and there are quite a few of them. But that would not stop me from criticizing or pointing out his mistakes or his lack of truthfulness to the avowed vision. For me that is democracy.
A few loksatta volunteers are distraught about my questioning JP. What guts you have to question him?? You dont need guts to question him. What you need is a sense of what true democracy is.
Mahatma Gandhi said,"The real Swaraj will come not by the acquisition of authority by a few but by the acquisition of capacity by all to resist authority when abused"
This is what is sorely missing in LSP.
Cheers
Dear Rakesh, I cannot agree more with you. Thanks for putting it so well.
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify, for "love for law and order", I meant it with a negative connotation, wanted to say something like "bureaucratic love". Also, tally in the narrow sense of branding someone pro- or anti-Telangana. In general, you are spot on, all actions accountable, no kid gloves for JP or anyone.
ReplyDeleteWhether or not JP reacted on OU incident, whether or someone like JP/ his views/ his statements, how is attacking him justifiable?
ReplyDeleteWhy are we missing that freedom speech is our fundamental right? Let people who didnt like him views, speak out. If we start assaulting people that speak diverse views, where do we endup? Very disheartening to see even the young and educated folks falling prey to the politicians with political agenda.
@Sundeep,
ReplyDeleteI wonder what makes you say that JP's judgement is clouded by his love for the law. I do not even understand the meaning of the above sentence. In a democracy, especially for those in the law making business, the law, and constitution should be above everything. Agreed that many times the behavior of our police is undemocratic, but what about the behavior of students?
@Rakesh,
Very nice blog, and work. I want to ask you a question - Do you really support unconditional withdrawal of cases on students? Is that what justice is all about?
@Sundeep,
ReplyDeleteIf a law does not provide justice, then the answer is only a better law. If the law makers themselves do not believe in the law, and act as goondas, how are they going to ask ppl to follow the law.
@Aditya: Discussion in the comments of a blog dont go anywhere. I did see your comment on my blog. You can call me on 9885419012 and we could discuss further.

ReplyDeleteAditya, I wanted to say "bureaucratic love for law and order". When you make a subtle substitution and say "the law", the meaning changes quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteMy attempt is to understand why many reasonable people in Telangana are unhappy with Lok Satta. This is quite unfortunate given the several issues on which Lok Satta has fought for justice for Telangana. Even on the matter of bifurcation, the policy has never been to obstruct it, but insisting that it will not be a panacea and that real justice can be delivered only through improved politics and decentralization. Also, Dr JP is the only politician I know of who has consistently tried to engage with students on both sides of the divide and reasoned with them to not get carried away and treat bifurcation as a matter of life and death.
As far as I can understand, the OU incident on Feb 14, 2010 was a turning point. If you see what Rakesh is saying and providing evidence for, it was established in no uncertain terms that police excess in violation of fundamental rights had taken place. The students had no role in destruction of media property on that day. The worst thing was that police entered the hostels in OU and beat up students who had in no way broken the law. They also terrorized and in some cases molested girl students.
See some reports on the incident and the investigations:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Cops-set-ablaze-scribes-bike-JC-admits-in-HC/articleshow/5590520.cms
http://barandbench.com/brief/2/531/telangana-judge-slams-ap-police
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/national/cctv-footage-reveals-vital-clues-591
http://missiontelangana.com/?p=158
In addition to being a blatant breach of fundamental rights of the students and media, it was seen as an attempt to brutally suppress the Telangana movement. Already emotions were running high in the movement and this attack on young students, especially on girls, meant that they reached fever pitch.
In this background, the muted response of Lok Satta, as can be seen even from the prominence, or lack of it, given to the issue in the link Anonymous has provided above was, in my opinion, a mistake, a failure to appreciate the gravity of the situation.
My understanding is that from that point on, everything Lok Satta does or does not do in relation to the Telangana movement has become suspect. Apart from the criticism of reasonable people such as Rakesh, it became a prime target of blatant lie-mongering and demonizing by dishonest cranks. My belief is that this has had traction with a significant number of people because of the perceived snub in failing to adequately condemn the police excess in OU on humanitarian grounds, forget about democracy and rights.
In any case, what is done is done. I am confident that Lok Satta can overcome this unpopularity by delivering on it's agenda.
My appeal to LSP supporters is that while the party has the prerogative to act and respond as it sees fit on issues, others have the prerogative to disapprove and question the aspects they disagree with. If you want to be a force in politics, in addition to countering dishonest critics, you have to be able to empathize and engage with, and learn from the reasonable people who oppose you.
@Sundeep, where are all these reasonable people when suicides are being regarded as matyrdom, and false suicides are being claimed? http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/The-Anatomy-Of-A-Suicide/articleshow/5609423.cms. Will it glad glory to a democratic movement?.
ReplyDelete//My understanding is that from that point on, ///
FYI, there was a conscious attempt in OU to depict JP as anti Telangana even before that incident. They made propaganda with posters, cartoons depicting JP as one of "10 faced Ravanasura" along with Lagadapati, Babu, Rosaiah opposing T state(you can refer to the posters of the Garjanas in OU). You should not forget the political aspects just because students are involved
do you think there is a democratic atmosphere in OU?. For example, do you think there is an atmosphere where JP can go there and talk to students?. First all the reasonable people act blind to the excesses and create a situation you need to attack someone to prove you are not against and later say someone hasn't responded well to some other excesses.
Firstly all the reasonable people should wake up and stand up for democratic values and realize it will only add more value to the movement. Otherwise it is very difficult for parties like LSP whatever they do and they will be helpless except to wait till such situation comes.
Anonymous, there are many players in the Telangana movement. OU students are only one of the them. Let us not pretend otherwise.
ReplyDeleteAlso, let us stop behaving as if being in LSP automatically makes one a beacon of democratic values. And in the same way, as if everyone involved in or sympathetic to the Telangana movement belongs to the medieval ages. Such blanket characterization simply has no basis in truth and will not help in any way.
@sundeep, we should also remember to admit the facts how hard they might be, then only we get real solutions.
ReplyDelete//OU students are only one of the them//
They are the major players. let us not pretend otherwise.
Whole point I wanted to make is we should see the political aspects of the issue. No matter how hard LSP might have reacted to the incident, doesn't matter as there was a previous brainwash among students that JP is against telangana. It is not as simple as you said "a mistake". LSP supporters also should stop pretending that just being soft will get support always.
I am a sympathizer to the telangana movement but that does not stop me bringing out the excesses of the movement. I strongly believe my actions will take it further only. Anyway I don't want to make this a discussion on that issue.. just a clarification.

The Road Not Taken
ReplyDeleteTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Anonymous, I happen to think non-major players also matter. I suspect you do too, given your political affiliation.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sharing the link and I appreciate your concerns. However, where in my arguments above did I say that JP/LSP should condone the idiocy or recklessness of students or anyone else? Since we've stopped talking to each other and are talking at each other, let us stop on this issue here.
I hope we meet in more agreeable circumstances later. We might have more in common than otherwise. I can be reached at sundeep.pattem@gmail.com.
